Workshop Information

Wilderness recreation has indisputable mental and physical health benefits, and it's not just for younger generations. But how do you get started, or re-started, now that you have the time? This seminar will prepare you with all the essentials to successfully incorporate wilderness exploration into your retirement journeys. We'll cover tents, sleeping gear, packs, clothing, cooking, safety, trip planning, and more. We will also discuss the principles and strategies for reducing carried weight – an essential consideration for mature backcountry adventurers. This seminar is offered by the newly-established Museum of Camping, whose mission is to celebrate and preserve the history, artifacts, and experiences that connect us to nature and to each other. The seminar will be led by Museum founder Jeff Stanger, who is also head of backpacking instruction for the local Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club.
